Mai Po Nature Reserve – Metropolis Planner at Deep Bay
To enhance students’ understanding of conservation through first-hand experience, the Geography Department and the Careers and Life Planning Unit collaboratively organized a field study at Mai Po for F4 and F5 Geography students. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), this educational excursion offered hands-on exploration of Hong Kong’s diverse wetland habitats and deepened students’ understanding of the nature of the work and core values of urban planners.
In addition to observing these natural wetland habitats in person, students took part in the "Metropolis Planner" activity. This interactive exercise enabled students to simulate the urban planning of the “Northern Metropolis” by challenging them to analyze the impacts of the large-scale development project on local wetlands. Through group discussions and a simulated urban planning exercise, they also gained insight into stakeholder perspectives and the vital importance of sustainable development.
The hands-on experience effectively addressed to the school’s major concerns through self-directed exploration in nature and discovering possible solutions through active participation. Through this of immersive experience, students not only deepened their connection to nature, but were also empowered to become active global citizens equipped to tackle pressing environmental challenges, particularly biodiversity loss and climate change.
