I was lucky to have this pleasant experience at the EcoPark. We set foot in WEEE-PARK, which is a treatment facility specified in the recycling of certain household electrical appliances such as televisions and refrigerators. It provides quite a shocking view of stacks of dozens of container boxes filled with electrical appliances. The place comprises lines of conveyors for separating materials of complicated machines into chunks or scraps for recycling. While it may look like a slaughterhouse for appliances we once used, it is a far better place for unwanted items to end up in, compared to landfills. With a recycling rate of over 80%, the facility is a significant mark of Hong Kong's waste reduction.
Speaking of landfills, we also paid a visit to the plastic recycling education centre in the visitor centre of the park. There was one large-scale exhibition on different sorts of waste, describing the situation in daily waste and major landfills in Hong Kong. There was a rather large replica of a landfill and an information corner on plastic recycling. The visit made me learn more about recycling in general and consolidated my knowledge on plastic and other materials so that I now have a better understanding in chemistry.
