Three weeks of wonderful experience in England

By Wong Ka Wan

24th July, 2010 -- I will certainly remember this date which gives me the most special and important memory in my school life -the trip to England! This was the first time I travelled to a country that is so far away from Hong Kong without my parents. Before the trip, I was just so excited. The trip occupied all my thoughts. Time flies, now, it has already been four months since I came back from England but the memory is still so fresh in my mind. I was so worried that I couldn't get on well with my host family and the friends from other countries. When I first arrived at the house of my host family, all my worries went away since my host mother was smiling so nicely and then I started to know that my time in England would be excellent! The most impressive thing was that I got lost the first day when getting home! After we had finished the activity in the city centre, we had to get back to our home by ourselves. The first day when I arrived, my host mother told me the way to go to school but she did not tell me how to get home! When I made sure that I had got on the right bus, I started to realize that I didn't know which stop to get off! Unlike Hong Kong, there aren't names at the stops and I began to panic. Fortunately, the bus driver was really kind and helped me check the map when I gave him the address. After getting off the bus, I was nervous that I couldn't figure out which house my home was! I wandered around for nearly half an hour and finally, I cried by the roadside. After calming down, I tried to find help. Again, I was so lucky that I found a group of drunken men. Initially, I didn't dare to seek help from them but I still did. They were very generous to lend me a phone and comforted me! I was so glad that I could meet these nice people on my journey without my family. It made me become independent as I learnt how to get on well with the others and stay calm when facing difficulties. I had never tried anything like this when my parents were around. This trip was short, but it taught me things I could use throughout my lifetime. It was a fantastic experience which I will remember forever. I really need to thank the Wan Chai Rotary Club for offering me such a good opportunity to learn and experience life in England.
